John 11:25: 'I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in me, though he die, yet shall he live.'
Lazarus has been dead four days. Martha is grieving. Jesus doesn't first comfort her — he makes a staggering claim.
'I am' echoes God's name in Exodus 3. Jesus isn't saying he believes in resurrection. He's saying he is it.
Resurrection isn't a power Jesus borrows. It's his identity. Wherever he is, life is. That's why the grave couldn't hold him.
For everyone who trusts him: physical death is real, but it's not final. The one who is life itself has promised that those joined to him will live.
