John 15:5: 'I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing.'
A branch has one job: stay connected. The vine does the work of pushing sap, growing leaves, producing grapes.
'Abide' means to remain, to settle in, to make your home there. It's not a frantic activity — it's a settled trust.
'Apart from me you can do nothing.' Not nothing impressive — nothing. Nothing of eternal weight.
This frees you from performance Christianity. Your job isn't to manufacture fruit. Your job is to stay close to Jesus. The fruit takes care of itself.
