Read along.
Ezekiel 36:26-27: 'And I will give you a new heart, and a new spirit I will put within you. And I will remove the heart of stone from your flesh and give you a heart of flesh. And I will put my Spirit within you, and cause you to walk in my statutes.'
God promises a transplant, not a tune-up. The old heart of stone — hard, unresponsive, dead to God — gets replaced.
'A heart of flesh' — soft, responsive, alive. The kind of heart that can love God and feel his presence.
'I will put my Spirit within you.' Not just a new heart, but a new resident. The Holy Spirit lives inside.
This is the new covenant Jesus would inaugurate, sketched centuries in advance. The Christian life isn't try harder — it's a new heart powered by a new Spirit.
