Jesus opens the most famous sermon ever preached with a sentence that flips everything upside down.
'Poor in spirit' isn't financial poverty. It's the awareness that you have nothing to offer God. You're spiritually bankrupt and you know it.
'Blessed' means deeply happy, flourishing, in a good place. Jesus says: that's the state of the spiritually poor.
Why? Because admitting you have nothing is the only way to receive the kingdom. The full-handed can't take what's offered. The empty-handed can.
