'Do to others as you would have them do to you.' Most people have heard some version of it. Jesus said it in a sermon, right after telling his disciples to love their enemies.
Notice the order. He doesn't say 'wait until they treat you well, then respond in kind.' He says start with how you'd want to be treated, and treat them that way first.
That tiny reversal changes everything. It pulls you out of scorekeeping. It makes you the one who sets the tone. You stop reacting and start acting.
And the test is honest. Would I want to be talked about this way? Would I want to be ignored like this? Would I want someone to give me the benefit of the doubt? Then do that — first.
It's the simplest ethical instruction ever given, and the hardest to actually live.
