Peter assumes people will ask. If you're living differently — calmer in chaos, more hopeful in hard times — eventually somebody will notice and ask why.
His instruction is to be ready. Not memorized like a script. But thought through. Why do you actually believe? What does your hope rest on?
Notice the topic — hope. Not theology debates. Not culture wars. Start with what gives you hope, and the rest follows naturally.
And the manner: gentleness and respect. The truth doesn't need to be barked at people to be heard. Most people who walked away from harsh Christians could've been won by gentle ones.
