James assumes you'll need wisdom. He's writing to Christians scattered, persecuted, making hard decisions with limited information. Sound familiar?
Wisdom isn't the same as information. We have plenty of information. Wisdom is knowing what to do with it — how to act in this situation, with these people, in this moment.
The instruction is simple. Ask. And the description of God's response is the part most of us miss: he gives generously, without reproach. He doesn't roll his eyes at the question. He doesn't make you feel small for not figuring it out.
