Psalm 51 is David's prayer after the prophet Nathan confronted him about Bathsheba and Uriah. The whole psalm is one long act of repentance.
In the middle of it: 'Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me.'
The Hebrew word for 'create' here is bara — the same word used in Genesis 1 when God made the universe out of nothing. David isn't asking for a tune-up. He's asking for an act of creation.
That's what real repentance sounds like. It doesn't promise to do better. It admits the heart itself needs to be remade — and asks the only one who can do it.
