Psalm 34:18 — 'The Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit.'

Near is a location word. It tells you where God is. And his address, according to this verse, is right next to the people most undone. Not avoiding them. Drawn to them.

Brokenhearted is not poetic exaggeration. It's the honest word for what grief does. Something inside is fractured, and you can feel it physically. God meets you there.

Crushed in spirit is the second image. Pressed flat. No fight left. It's the place where you have stopped pretending. That is the place where God starts saving.

Notice what's missing. He doesn't promise an explanation. He promises presence. Sometimes the first gift in suffering is just knowing you are not alone in it.
