Joshua 1:9: 'Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be frightened, and do not be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.'
Moses is dead. Joshua is now leading an unruly nation into hostile territory. Anxiety would be natural.
God commands courage three times in the opening of this chapter. Not a suggestion. A command.
Notice the warning against being frightened and dismayed — God knows the human heart's defaults. Courage requires rejecting those defaults.
'For the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.' This is the foundation of courage. Not Joshua's competence — God's presence. The same is true for you.
