1 Samuel 16:7: 'For the Lord sees not as man sees: man looks on the outward appearance, but the Lord looks on the heart.'
Samuel is at Jesse's house to anoint a king. He sees the tall, impressive eldest son and thinks: surely this is the one.
God says no. 'Man looks on the outward appearance.' That's our defaulthow tall, how attractive, how impressive.
'The Lord looks on the heart.' He sees what's underneath the surface — the motives, the loves, the secret loyalties.
David is the youngest, still tending sheep, not even invited to the gathering. But his heart is right. That's why he's anointed king.
